Shipston-on-Stour really does have the best of both worlds. Unmistakably Warwickshire, with its mixture of predominantly clay and blue lias stone, but cheek-by-jowl up against the Cotswolds, so providing more choice for a wider range of buyer. This is another wool town, perhaps more proud of it than the other towns listed here, having run a successful Wool Fair until 2021. The town’s name “Scepwaestune”- Sheepwashtown shows the connection and whenever you visit, you’re likely to find a spot of yarn-bombing on a phone box, a bollard or something odd! A town with real character and blessed with pubs, places to eat but importantly, not without a fish and chip shop, Chinese and Indian takeaways.
There is more housing generally in Shipston, which potentially better enables families of different generations to continue to live in the same town as one another, and there is a wide variety of property types, with flats, bungalows and two new care homes dotted throughout the town. If you are moving to the area for a change of scenery, from urban to rural, Shipstonis a great place to start. It has everything you need, a charming town centre with award-winning hospitality, yet it’s right on the doorstep of beautiful countryside, different in each direction, from the rolling limestone wolds to the west and the cotton-cloud topped hills of the civil war country in the east.
Commercially, there are warehouses, yards and offices, abutting open farmland towards Brailes and Oxofrdshire to the east, and looking up towards Ilmington Downs and the Cotswolds on the other. Stratford-on-Avon is a 15 minute drive, Oxford an hour and the Cotswold Hills are a walk or short drive away.
There is a leisure centre on the site of the excellent secondary school Shipston High, run by Everyone Active – who are also at Stratford on Avon – and the sports clubs in Shipston are incredibly well-represented, particularly rugby union.
